As we draw closer to the Eastern Bay of Plenty’s star studded festive celebration, Kawerau’s Christmas in the Park can confirm a full day of family entertainment.

The day will begin with the Kawerau Santa Parade which has thousands of dollars of prizes up for grabs; schools, businesses, community groups and individuals will all be adding the finishing touches to their inspired floats with all shapes and sizes being expected. Registration forms are still available at the Council offices, Kawerau Information Centre or on www.kawerauchristmasinthepark.co.nz and float registrations will be taken up until and on the day (meet for judging at 10am behind the Rec Centre). After two laps of the Kawerau CBD the judges will adjourn to determine the winning floats and they will be announced on stage in Prideaux Park shortly after Kaumatua Graham Te Rire has officially opened the day with a karakia and a warm welcome to the event attendee’s at 1.30pm.

Shortly after the parade prize giving, The Radio 1XX Community Christmas Concert will take to the stage with local celebrity radio host; Colin Magee, the Master of Ceremony along with Kawerau Music Schools very own lovable wahine, Lynn Elliot co hosting.

The afternoon show will be packed with plenty of variety of the cream of local talent with Quentin Martin, Joseph Matthews, Kawerau Music School, Mike Davies, Fusion dance crew, Reviva Dance Crew, Shaquielle, Acoustic Soul, Tait Kora, Prodigious, Stiff Joints, Tea Tree and New Nation, all scheduled to perform during the day time show. Prideaux Park will be filled to the brim with fun rides, sideshows and food vendors for all ages and tastes.

After a short break between 6-7pm a festive welcome from Kawerau’s Deputy Mayor, Bernie Joyce will start Kawerau’s Christmas in the Park’s evening show and it will display one of the strongest line ups in recent years, with the eagerly awaited reggae sensation, 1814 as the main headlining act. The family orientated show will feature total talent in the form of Russell Harrison, Sharon Emirali, Alisha Fai’Hulton, Haylee Nitschke and local Eastern Bay artists The Tait Kora Band and Cameron Rota.

The day is set to be capped off with a massive firework display from Van Tiel Pyrotechnics who provided the stunning display at the Rugby World Cup last year.

The organisers would also like to politely remind members of the public attending this year that it is a family focussed event with no drugs, alcohol or gang regalia permitted into the venue. For your safety there will be a police & security presence throughout the day. The weather forecast is for a hot dry day in Kawerau, please take care in the sun – drink plenty of water and apply sun screen.
