Good news for tourism in the Whakatane and Kawerau areas – guest nights are well up.

Tourists stayed more than 21,300 nights in March – 23.5% up on the same time last year.

More than 4,000 of those were international visitors – up 37.5%

And it seems March wasn’t the only good month – figures were up for the year too – with a 9% rise to 195,000 nights visitors spent in the area.

However the number of overseas tourists staying in the region in the twelve months to March did drop by almost 5% – compared to a 1.5% decrease nationwide.

Visitors are staying here longer too – from 1.9 nights in March 2012 to 2.2 nights in the third month of this year.
