Kawerau’s BMX star has qualified second fastest in the women’s seeding race at the London Olympics.

Sarah Walker has only been beaten by Australian Caroline Buchanan – who is the current world time-trial champion.

BMX events at the Games begin with a seeding race to ensure the fastest riders don’t come together before the finals.

Speaking immediately after the race, the locally raised rider’s said she’s a better racer than she is a time-triallist, so this bodes well for the next rounds.

Walker progresses to the semi finals in the early hours of Saturday morning our time, followed by the final shortly after.

In Beijing four years ago, she just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth.

That was the first time BMX had featured at the Olympics.
