Norske Skog to cut production

Norske Skog Tasman management is talking with workers about the need to reduce capacity by 150 thousand tonnes.

This comes as the Kawerau-based company faces a global and regional decline in the demand for newsprint.

General Manager Peter McCarty says employees are well aware of the challenges being faced by the industry due to competition from electronic media.

He says while no jobs are at risk yet, this doesn’t mean that won’t change – with a decision on what to do due in September.

The Kawerau mill is now exporting more than two thirds of its production to Asia – and can’t profitably sustain this level.
