An engineering company’s redesign of a Kawerau boiler has gained national recognition.

The New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering has held its 2013 excellence in Earthquake Strengthening Awards.

The world first retrofit at the Carter Holt Harvey Number Two Recovery Boiler in Kawerau, designed by Beca, has won the Judge’s Commendation.

NZSEE awards convener Luke Allen says a considerable number of interesting and innovative earthquake strengthening projects are being undertaken around the country.

He says the aim of the awards is to showcase examples of seismic upgrades to promote a positive message for building owners and the public.
