Kicking the habit in Kawerau

This community has one of the highest rates in the country for Maori smokers, but that’s changing.

Thanks to the WERO Challenge – which is run nationwide – Kawerau is slowly turning smokefree.

Wero in the Māori language means ‘challenge’, and it’s a programme for people quitting together, rather than individuals trying to go it alone.

Anna Burns-Francis takes a look at the new and improved Kawerau.
