Kawerau mill targeted in new bill

The Kawerau pulp and paper mill has been referred to as a reason behind a former East Coast MP’s bill.

Green Party’s Catherine Delahunty has drafted the Restricted Duration of Certain Discharge and Coastal Permits.

She explains how, if it passes, the mill won’t be able to continue pumping waste into the Tarawera River – which it’s done since 1955.

The former East Coast MP says the bill closes a loophole allowing pollution of waterways and restricts exceptional circumstances to five years.

Ms Delahunty is thrilled to see the legislation drawn, and says it will protect rivers and coasts from being treated as drains.
