WITH two months to go, preparation is well under way for Kawerau’s 2014 Christmas in the Park celebration.

During a meeting on September 30, Kawerau District Council agreed to apply for $60,000 in funding to support the event.

Events and community activities team leader Lee Barton said the event had established itself as the premier festive celebration in the Bay of Plenty.

He said many spectators attended from outside the town and enjoyed the variety and performances.

To fund the event’s infrastructure, sound, lighting, marketing and show management, the council would ask for $25,000 from the Lion Foundation, $30,000 from New Zealand Community Trust and $5000 from the Eastern Bay Energy Trust.

This year’s event will be held on December 13 and the council has already begun applying for additional grants to fund stage construction, performers’ fees and fireworks displays.
