Suicide Awareness March
Prideaux Park, Plunket Street, Kawerau
Saturday 6th April 2013
10:00am - 1:00pm

A march aiming to promote suicide awareness is taking place in Kawerau.

Local organisations will be banding together to ‘Look at Health from the Inside Out, Kawerau Stylze’.

Tuhwharetoa Ki Kawerau clinical manager, Peta Ruha says the community has an opportunity here to broach a topic often considered too taboo for discussion.

She says the event is supported by the Super Maori Fullas and the Green Ribbon Riders, who ride against teenage suicide.

She says from July 2011 to June 2012, 547 young New Zealanders took their lives, adding Maori seem to make up most of the statistics.

It coincides with World Health Day and starts with a powhiri at 10am on April 6 at Prideaux Park.
